Filling your wall space with art can sometimes seem daunting, but there are simple ways to determine what size frames you should buy for different wall Spaces. You want art to be eye-catching, but not overwhelming. Think about where people are likely to stand while viewing the artwork in the frame and how big your walls are. Instead of thinking about the entire wall, consider only the parts that need focus, such as over the couch or fireplace.
So let's start with 2 simple rules that will help you choose the right wall art size for your space and improve your decorating skills.
1) Wall art should make up 60-75% of the available wall space, i.e. the wall space not covered by furniture or decorative strips. First measure the width and height of the walls, then multiply them by 0.60 and 0.75. This will give you a range of image sizes that fit the space. For example: If you have a blank wall 9 feet high and 5 feet wide, you can multiply both 9 and 5 by 0.6 and 0.75. The ideal height of the frame is between 5.4 and 6.75 feet, and the ideal width is between 3 feet and 3.75 feet.
2) When hanging wall decorations on furniture such as beds, fireplaces or sofas, they should be between 2/3 and 3/4 of the width of the furniture. For example, you could do a similar calculation here to measure the ideal frame size over a sofa. Assuming your couch is 6 feet wide, multiply 6 by 0.66 and 0.75. So a picture that's 3.6 feet to 4.5 feet wide is perfect for sitting on top of a couch.
